Russell studied Fine Art at Leeds Art College and Leeds Metropolitan University and has been painting for many years. His work can be described as contemporary, in that he begins with a thought, a sketch, a theme, an idea, a photograph or a study based on a memorable place he has visited. All must portray imagination and originality.

The shapes, depth, marks and vibrant colour Russell uses are central, as these all contribute to the work and allow him to grasp the essence of the painting.

When Russell senses the composition is finished, the colour is correct, the result is clean, fresh and full of liveliness, he then leaves it to the viewer to interpret. At this point, the viewers interpretation will also give meaning to the painting.

In some cases, Russell paints with special implements, a practice he is associated with. He has completed commissions for both private and corporate buyers in Europe and is known for his original, creative work.
